The Quad AMD Servers

Around November 2006 Iwas in the market for a loadtest environment, since we were on a tight budged I opted to build the machine myself.

We decided to order 2x Quad AMD64 (Opteron) motherboards from Tyan, Kingston Memory and Seagate Sata disks with a Raid controller from Adaptec.

The cases were a different matter, there are only a handfulll of cases that you can use (this is a different form factor than the 2cpu extended ATX), the form factor is called SSI but they require EPS typepower supplies. Eventually I disovered that none of the cases available were handy, no single case could hold 2x EPS power supplies, SSI Motherboard and 16x HDD (12 5.25" bays).

Instead I bought CMSTACKER cases and decided to modify the backplane myself and change the location of the power supplies.

Come Christmas time I got my new toys and started the assembly, there were several supprices along the way but non were showstoppers. The first task was to fashion a new backplane with SSI compatable mounting holes and to make sure the PCI Express slots alligned with the case. During this phase I moved the upper powersupply down and mounted both of them sideways. The backplane is made of aluminium and is mounted on top of the old backplane, to make up for the thickness of the aluminium plate I used smaller MB mounting studs (the original CMSTACKER ones are huge).

To be able to use all 12 5.25" bays I moved the powerbutton to the top of the case.

The installation is really tight because the adaptec drive bays are slightly oversize and are way to deep (Adaptec really should shave off 20mm from the back).

To make sure the powersupplies would get cooling and that there was space for powercords I cut holes into the sides with an anglegrinder and used an air dremmel to trim the cuts
